These handrails are from a piece of exercise equipment. They had been in use for many years, and the original finish was failing. The old finish was some sort of film finish, and it was peeling and discolored where it had seen the most wear. The handrails were removed and brought to the shop where they were scraped and sanded to remove the old finish and restore a smooth surface to the wood. Since these were handrails, they were refinished with oil and paste wax to give them a pleasant feel. This also makes it easier to maintain the finish as wax can be reapplied as necessary.
